Does it bother you to think that whatever you[1] would earn in your lifetime is minted by hundereds of others[2] in a year. Or whatever you dare not even wish (oh yes, you do not) is made in just one day by many others[3]?
I am afraid you might find the thought a bit depressing. Do not.
Think about it.
What does make the difference? I won't plunge into the rhetoric of Ambition, Passion, Dream, Sweat or whatever, i leave that crap to Robert Kiyosaki, Shiv Khera, Deepak Chopra et al. who are good at nursing these "shots of steroid"[4].
I do think i know the difference[5], but here i am interested in the bigger picture.
All i care is that i was not born destined to be an engineer in a status oriented society of racing-rats. We are born humans[6], who would fulfill their needs[7], desires[8] and use their share of resources and must die.
It is the (mis)understanding of our desires that makes us restless. We are not sure of what counts and to what extent. Would a private jet or a business class ticket or an economy class ticket do? And to travel where -- Las Vegas, Bali or Massi-Da-Pind. Stay where -- Suite in a seven, five, three star hotel, or a self-checkin hotel?
The point is, there are many ways to do something. We can not beat[9] everyone (not our ego for sure) by going a different/better way. The billionares go for the most expensive options and thousandares, like me, go for cheapest options. Who enjoys[10] more, or is happier, is not yet answered!
Even if i can not earn more than Gates(read wealth), even if i can not execute kings like Bush does(read power) and even if i can not taste exotic cuisines and keep keeps like some Sultans do(read luxury), i have no reason to enjoy my life any way lesser! (conditions apply[11])
I remember reading somewhere "I may not own the world but i don't give a damn to who does"
Now get back to the rat-race, just remember to enjoy it and not complain if u "lose" it.
[1] -> Engineer/Doctor in better cases.
[2] -> CXOs of Colas, Banks and Abcsofts and many politician.
[3] -> Gates, Buffet, Rothschilds, Ambanis, Mittals.
[4] -> You heard me. More on that next time.
[5] -> So you are interested!
[6] -> An intelligent animal, to be precise.
[7] -> Food, Sex and Shelter.
[8] -> Taste, Lust and Luxury.
[9] -> I say why at all?
[10] -> definition of joy is relative and subjective.
[11] -> Those who matter most to me must also share my viewpoint.

Great ideals!! I already like you.
But there is a flip side to that coin. The world may brand us as pessimist, loser, no-achiever blah blah. Being Content is no easy job. I guess it takes a lot of discontent for being content. But then, part of this contentment is not caring for the world. Well, personalities far superior than us have tried this throughout history without much success. My belief is that its not personality-driven, its situation driven. Which means, context is more important than content here.
Thanks for the compliment.
Buddy, you can't buy the ideal without paying its price: a way of thinking.
If you have that way of thinking, you wouldn't care about the world. You can't emulate it, you have to have it.
I have no desire of ever beating any superior personality, coz if i have, i lose it :)
dude.,
the thing U read somewhere is like this.,
Don't live as if U own this world.,
live as If U don't care who owns it.,
Now thats attitude .,Live wit it..
n ya.,
abt your post.,
I found some ideas very strongly portrayed.,
1.One of Gautam buddha's most significant teachings.,
"greed or desire leads to a man's disaster"..
2. second comes from bhagvad Gita or matRix.,
whichevr Ur better acquainted with.
why am I here n not somewhere else.,
is everythin defined.,
is my struggle a part of my glory.,
am I really wat I shud be.,
the matrix has a nice line to say th same,( I have seen only 45mins of th 1st part )
but this line is splendid.,
"You have already made the choice.,
You are here to find out why you are here.."
now my personal take on ur blog.,
to be frank n blunt which I mostly am.,
the central idea behind the post is not esoteric.,
its way too common.,
this is like a common question that has existed for literally every human in the whole of mankind.,
those who cud find the answer have been taken for God's( Jesus., Nanak., Buddha etc etc.. )
I liked the way U framed the post.,
cuz U kept in mind those things.,
moh.,
maya.,
n all that.
,i think sikhism has somethin to say abt a set of 5 similar thngs.,
I dun knw them precisely.,
but I find them familiar.,
someone who aint religious oriented.,
will always get the point.
,n that makes ur post really nice according to me.,
have a thought is one part.
,but the more important aspect is conveying it properly if U decide to do so.,
U have done that very well.,
by talkin of relevant n familiar examples..
to be frank n blunt which I mostly am
I appreciate that. I would rather have my opinions corrected than pampered.
the central idea behind the post is not esoteric.,its way too common.
You got it.
In fact i have contempt for divine/esoteric ideas which are out of the grasp of Tom, Dick and Harry.
Any idea, that can't be explained by daily-life events and thoughts, is better left hidden in hardcover books. I find any 'divine' idea boring, if it can't be simplified down till ....because 1+1=2.
moh.,maya.,n all that.,i think sikhism ....
Ahh...here we depart.
Religion, God and Divinity were the last things on my mind when i wrote the post. I simply penned down my thoughts.
Perhaps, you got the impression you got because deep in my heart i believe Religions profess a healthy way of life, Gods preached caring for only what really matters and Divinity is nothing but rational thinking.
have a thought is one part.
,but the more important aspect is conveying it properly if U decide to do so., U have done that very well., by talkin of relevant n familiar examples..
Thanks.
I am afraid, you wont find many fancy ideas in my writings. And I believe we need no fancy ideas.
Babe or a Baba? doesn't matter. So long as you can learn something practical from her/him.
great post Jassi paaji!
I have always been a fan of your interesting PoVs, and am glad to see you have not lost the edge :-).
This reminded me of a doha I read somewhere:
गो-धन गज-धन राज-धन अनाज-धन
नाम-रतन धन खान |
जब आवे संतोष-धन
सब धन धूल समान ||
[Godhan, Gaj dhan, Raj dhan Anaaj dhan, Naam ratan rhan khaan.
Jab aawe santosh dhan, sab dhan dhool samaan]
Rough translation for those who do not follow it ( I know _you_ can, dear J):
There are many types of treasures in the world - and the treasure of good name is like finding a huge bounty. However, all such treasures seem like dirt when compared to the treasure of contentment.
There was a lecture some days ago by an economics professor at USC, who covered something similar to your post, and talked about how it has been proven by statistics that "getting things", like a new car, does not keep one happy in the long run. On the other hand, having a fulfilling family life and a healthy body go a long way in determining one's perceived quality of life. I guess american professors also agree with you :-).
cheers,
-A
